How it works

You manage all event content in GatherUs. The plugin pulls it in and keeps it current.

Read-only here

Edit an event in GatherUs and the change syncs over to WordPress.

Public only

Private events are never shown and never counted.

Adapts anywhere

The same shortcode fits a wide column or a narrow sidebar.

Before you start

  • ✓WordPress 5.8 or newer
  • ✓PHP 7.4 or newer
  • ✓Pretty permalinks recommended. Set Settings → Permalinks to anything other than “Plain” so your webhook URL stays clean.

Install the plugin

  1. Get the plugin file, named gatherus-events.zip.
  2. In WordPress admin, go to Plugins → Add New → Upload Plugin.
  3. Choose the ZIP, click Install Now, then Activate.

A new GatherUs Events menu (calendar icon) appears in your sidebar. Prefer manual install? Copy the gatherus-events folder into wp-content/plugins/ and activate from the Plugins screen.

Connect GatherUs

This is what makes your events flow from GatherUs into WordPress.

  1. In WordPress, go to GatherUs Events → Settings. In the Webhook setup box, copy the endpoint URL: https://your-site.com/wp-json/gatherus/v1/webhook
  2. In GatherUs, create a new webhook and paste that URL.
  3. Under Event types, check Event Created, Event Updated, and Event Deleted. Save.
  4. Open the webhook and copy its Secret key.
  5. Back in WordPress, under Settings → Security, paste it into Webhook signing secret and save.
A note on security

Every webhook request is verified with HMAC-SHA256 (the x-webhook-signature header). If the signing secret is empty or doesn’t match, the request is rejected. The secret in WordPress must match the one in GatherUs exactly.

Show your events

Add the shortcode to any page, post, or block-enabled widget area.

Shortcode What it shows
[gatherus_events] All upcoming events
[gatherus_events count="3"] The next 3 upcoming events

Leave out count to show everything. Private events are excluded and don’t count toward the number.

What each event card shows

  • 1Event graphic, with a fallback image when none is set. Links to the GatherUs event page.
  • 2Event title. Also a link to the event page.
  • 3Start date and time. End date shows only when the event spans more than one day.
  • 4Sign Up button. Goes straight to registration.
  • 5Day divider above each group, localized to your site’s language. Same-day events share one divider.

Manage events in WordPress

The All Events screen is read-only. You’ll see each event’s Start (sortable) and Visibility (Public or Private).

The only action is the trash icon. It removes the event from this website but does not delete it in GatherUs. If the event is updated in GatherUs later, it syncs back in.

Settings reference

Everything on the front end is configurable under GatherUs Events → Settings, grouped the way it appears on screen.

Security

  • Webhook signing secret — the Secret key from your GatherUs webhook.

Display rules

  • Remove event when it ends (default) or when it starts.

Labels & messages

  • Button label — default “Sign Up”.
  • Empty state — message when no events.

Date & time

  • Day-divider format — default l, j F Y.
  • Time format — default H:i. Live preview.

Colors

  • Text, card, accent, button text. Picker + exact code + opacity. Card supports transparent.

Imagery

  • Fallback image URL — shown when an event has no graphic.

Troubleshooting

?Events aren’t appearing

Confirm the Secret key matches GatherUs exactly, check the event is public with a future start or end, and make sure the event type checkboxes were enabled in GatherUs.

?Webhook returns 401

The signature didn’t match. Re-copy the Secret key.

?Webhook returns 503

The signing secret field is empty. Add the key and save.

?Layout looks cramped in a sidebar

That’s expected. Cards stack vertically in narrow areas and sit side-by-side in wide ones.
